Professional Development
Broaden your knowledge; take hold of the opportunity. As well as providing chances for clinical development, NYMFTN is dedicated to helping you expand the scope of your professional practice. Integrating networking, community building, and skills-based training on what it is to be in business as a Marriage and Family Therapist, we hope to reduce the isolation of clinical work and neutralize the inferiority complex that so many therapists struggle with when considering advancing their careers, empowering you to seize possibility for expansion while being supported by like-minded thinkers.
Clinicians Collectives
The goal of NYMFTN’s Collectives is to cultivate space for talented clinicians who share a common identity or focus. Through Socratic dialogue, clinicians will build on their own knowledge through community and cohesion. In order to keep these discussions impactful, participation in each Clinicians Collective will be limited each month to a first come, first serve basis.
-Black Clinicians Collective: With the Black Lives Matter movement challenging and changing systems, families, and relationships, our culture is finally examining the intergenerational trauma of slavery, segregation, and ongoing racial prejudice, which negatively impacts Black people in America. The historically White mental health field has often ignored this ongoing crisis when diagnosing and treating Black and African-American clients. As the fight for action continues, building a community of Black clinicians who are able to support one another as humans and therapists in the long road ahead is vital for maintaining connectedness, staying grounded, and providing racially affirming therapy for clients of all cultures. As therapists, we are leaders in communication. More than ever, we must cut through the noise and harness the power of creating spaces to listen. We’re excited for you to join us in this opportunity to create continued forward progress in the mental health industry!
The moderator of these conversations will hold a secure space where individuals*** can freely express their personal experiences and professional perspectives on a variety of topics. All groups will be led through the lens of social justice, with a particular focus on anti-racist work within a relational perspective.
***Appropriate for Black or African-American identified clinicians or students.
-The Sex Therapy Collective: a monthly meeting for therapists with a focus on sex therapy to share and discuss professional experiences, challenges, and ideas. The moderator of these conversations will facilitate what is sure to be an energetic and enlightening conversation about the practice of sex therapy.
If you have any ideas for new collectives or are interested in moderating or hosting a collective, please email us at nymftnetwork@gmail.com and let us know!

Peer-Supported Study Group
The goal of NYMFTN’s Peer Supported Study Group is to help Marriage and Family Therapists prepare for the licensing exam. The Peer Supported Study Group is a 6-week course held 1x a week on Zoom for MFTs that is run by a leader who’s taken the study group & passed the licensing exam & a co-leader, which is usually a student who is beginning their studies for the licensing exam. The course is divided into topic days, theories, ethics, and DSM/crisis, and there are questions interspersed between lecturing materials. There is also a coach/mentor to come to speak at the end of the 6-week course, answer questions and help guide therapists with any assistance that will help them feel more confident and ready to continue practicing and taking the exam. We have this group bi-annually.
Student Leadership Initiative
The student leadership initiative was created in order to bridge the gap between students and clinicians and create a pipeline to leadership. Every year, students from NYS MFT Programs will be nominated by their program directors to join NYMFT in student leadership roles. The goal of student leadership is to provide an opportunity for students to get involved with NYMFT to build their CVs, connect with other systemic thinkers under the guidance of more established clinicians as well as build leadership skills. We hope to give space to allow for our next generation of thinkers to hone in on their skills and create a more expansive and well-rounded space for this community.
